Ferrite Content

Ferrite is the name given to the body-centred cubic modification of pure iron and its solid solutions. An excessively low ferrite content, e.g. in the area of weld seams, can lead to a loss of strength in austenitic and duplex steels. Too high a content reduces the corrosion resistance, toughness and ductility of the material. The ferrite content can be measured non-destructively using a magnetic-inductive measuring method. This test belongs to the category of non-destructive material testing. The ferrite content can also be measured using a material sample under a microscope. This test then belongs to the category of destructive material testing.
