What all processes have in common is that the mass of the workpiece remains unchanged. The tools used by formers exert high forces on the material and cause it to flow. Once the force is removed, the new shape is retained. It is important to determine before forming how many steps the process will require. The criterion for this determination is the permissible degree of forming that the material can withstand without being damaged. The degree of forming is the change in length caused by each step.
