Hot Rolling

If a rolling process takes place above the recrystallisation temperature of the material being processed, it is referred to as hot rolling. The recrystallisation temperature is a material-dependent variable. It is approximately 40% to 50% of the absolute melting temperature. The absolute temperature is measured in Kelvin. It is 273.15 higher than the temperature on the Celsius scale. If the temperature of a metal exceeds the recrystallisation temperature, the atoms have enough energy to rearrange themselves. This breaks down lattice defects in the crystal structure. In addition, the material can be processed more easily at high temperatures. Very high degrees of deformation can be achieved when hot rolling flat products. This means that the length at the end of the process is significantly greater than at the beginning.
